Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

Flesch Reading Ease: 90–100 = Grade 5, very easy. 70–80 = Grade 7, easy (target for web). 60–70 = Grade 8–9, standard (newspapers). 50–60 = Grade 10–12, fairly difficult. Below 30 = professional/academic. Target 60–70 for general web audiences; 70+ for healthcare and government communications.

What is the Gunning Fog Index?

Gunning Fog estimates years of education needed: 0.4 × (average sentence length + % of complex words with 3+ syllables). Score 12 = high-school senior. Score 6 = 6th grader. Target 10–12 for business writing. US government plain-language guidelines recommend under 10.

How do I lower the reading level of my text?

Break sentences over 20 words in two. Replace Latinate words with Anglo-Saxon ones ("use" not "utilise", "start" not "commence"). Cut adverbs and nominalizations ("consideration of" → "consider"). Use active voice. Avoid stacking multiple ideas in one sentence. Each fix directly improves all three scores.

What reading level should web content target?

General public websites: Grade 7–8 (Flesch 60–70). Consumer product descriptions: Grade 6–7. Healthcare/government: Grade 6 maximum (US federal plain language guidelines). B2B technical docs: Grade 10–12 is acceptable if the terminology is necessary. WCAG 3.1.5 (AAA) requires a Grade 9 alternative for content above that level.
