Frequently asked questions

How does compound interest work?

You earn interest on your interest, not just the principal. Formula: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t). Example: £10,000 at 5%, monthly compounding, 20 years → £27,126. Simple interest would give only £20,000. Compounding added £7,126.

What is the Rule of 72?

Years to double = 72 / annual return %. Examples: 4% → 18 years; 6% → 12 years; 8% → 9 years; 10% → 7.2 years; 12% → 6 years. Also works for inflation: 3% inflation → purchasing power halves in 24 years. An approximation — use the calculator for precise figures.

How much does compounding frequency matter?

£10,000 at 5% for 20 years: annual → £26,533; monthly → £27,126; daily → £27,183. Annual to monthly adds £593. Monthly to daily adds £57. The interest rate and contribution amount matter far more than compounding frequency.

How important are regular contributions vs the initial deposit?

£10,000 at 5% for 30 years = £43,219 (no contributions). Adding £200/month: total = ~£208,127. The £200/month (£72,000 contributed) grew to ~£165,000 via compounding. Starting early — even with small contributions — matters more than waiting to invest a larger sum.
