The five calculation modes

Question Formula Example
What is X% of Y? Y × (X / 100) 20% of 150 = 30
X is what % of Y? (X / Y) × 100 30 is what % of 150? = 20%
% change from X to Y ((Y − X) / X) × 100 80 → 100 = +25%; 100 → 80 = −20%
Add X% to Y (e.g. VAT) Y × (1 + X/100) Add 20% to £150 = £180
Subtract X% from Y Y × (1 − X/100) 10% off £200 = £180

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate X% of Y?

Result = (X / 100) × Y. Examples: 20% of 150 = 30; 15% of £80 (tip) = £12; 7.5% of 2400 (VAT) = 180; 0.5% of 10,000 (interest) = 50. Shortcut: 20% = multiply by 0.2.

How do I calculate percentage change?

% Change = ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. Positive = increase, negative = decrease. Examples: £80 → £100 = +25%; £100 → £80 = −20%. Note: increase and decrease percentages are not symmetrical — that is mathematically normal.

What is the difference between percentage points and percentage change?

Percentage point = arithmetic difference (3% − 2% = 1 pp). Percentage change = relative change ((3−2)/2 × 100 = 50%). Example: interest rate rising from 2% to 3% is a 1 percentage point increase but a 50% relative increase. Both are correct — context determines which to use.

How do I add or subtract a percentage from a number?

Add X%: N × (1 + X/100). Subtract X%: N × (1 − X/100). Add 20% VAT to £150: 150 × 1.20 = £180. Reverse VAT (remove from £180): 180 / 1.20 = £150 — NOT 180 × 0.80 = £144 (that would be applying a 20% discount, not removing VAT).
