Essential Open Graph tags

og:title

The title of your page for social sharing. Can differ from your HTML title — make it punchy and click-worthy for the social context.

og:description

A brief description (1–2 sentences) that appears below the title in the link preview. Aim for 100–200 characters.

og:image

The image shown in the preview card. Use 1200×630px JPG/PNG. Avoid critical text in the image — it may be cropped. Under 8 MB.

og:url

The canonical URL of the page being shared. Should match your page's canonical tag to avoid fragmented engagement metrics.

og:type

Content type: website (default), article, product, video.movie, etc. Affects how the platform renders the preview.

og:site_name

The name of your website or brand. Displayed alongside the preview to give users context about who published the content.

Frequently asked questions

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph (OG) tags are HTML meta tags that control how a webpage is displayed when shared on social networks. Introduced by Facebook in 2010 and now used by LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram and most other platforms, they let you specify the title, description, image and content type for the shared link preview.

What is the ideal Open Graph image size?

Facebook recommends 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1 aspect ratio) for link previews. Images smaller than 600×315 will not be displayed in larger format. Use JPG or PNG format, keep file size under 8 MB, and avoid embedding critical text in the image as it may be cropped.

Does og:title replace the HTML title tag?

No. The og:title tag only affects how your page is displayed when shared on social media. The HTML <title> tag is what search engines use for SERP listings. You can set them to different values — a shorter, punchier title for social and a keyword-optimised title for SEO.

How do I test my Open Graph tags?

Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug) to preview and refresh cached OG data. LinkedIn has the Post Inspector at linkedin.com/post-inspector. Social networks cache OG data — use debug tools to force a cache refresh after updating your tags.
