Frequently asked questions

What is schema markup and why does it matter for SEO?

Schema markup (structured data) is code added to a page that helps search engines understand its content and display rich results — star ratings, FAQ accordions, event details, product prices. Rich results can significantly increase click-through rates by making your listing stand out in the SERP.

What is JSON-LD and why is it preferred?

JSON-LD is Google's recommended format for structured data. Unlike Microdata and RDFa, JSON-LD is injected in a <script> block in the <head> and doesn't require modifying your HTML structure. This makes it easier to implement and maintain, especially on CMS platforms.

Does structured data directly improve rankings?

Not directly. Google has confirmed that structured data is not a ranking factor in itself. However, by enabling rich results (star ratings, FAQs, prices), it improves click-through rates — and higher CTR can indirectly improve your ranking position over time.

How do I test my schema markup?

Use Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) to validate your JSON-LD and see which rich result types your page is eligible for. The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks against the schema.org specification.
