Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). Example: 75 kg, 1.75 m → 75 / 3.0625 = 24.49. Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height² (in²). Example: 165 lb, 69 in → 703 × 165 / 4761 = 24.37. WHO categories: underweight < 18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, obese ≥ 30.

What are the limitations of BMI?

BMI cannot distinguish fat from muscle (athletes often show high BMI). It ignores fat distribution (belly fat is more harmful than fat elsewhere). Uses same thresholds for men and women. Different ethnic thresholds recommended for Asian populations (elevated risks at lower BMI). Less useful for children, elderly and pregnant women. Better alternatives: waist-to-height ratio, body fat %, waist circumference.

What is the healthy BMI range?

WHO normal weight: 18.5–24.9. For South Asian, East Asian and Southeast Asian people, many health organisations recommend lower thresholds: overweight ≥ 23, obese ≥ 27.5. Best health outcomes in large studies are typically associated with BMI 20–22 (men) and 19–21 (women).

What is the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy range (BMI 18.5–24.9): 5'4" (163 cm) → 49–74 kg (108–163 lb); 5'7" (170 cm) → 53–80 kg (118–176 lb); 5'9" (175 cm) → 57–86 kg (125–189 lb); 6'0" (183 cm) → 62–92 kg (136–203 lb). The calculator shows your personal range after computing your BMI.
